A commercial square in Nanjing has not yet officially opened, but the newly laid marble floor has suffered from surface damage, severe cracks, and holes. Some cracks look like spider webs, some cracks radiate like lightning before a thunderstorm, and some deeper cracks have already turned black inside, seriously affecting the beauty of the stone.
Seeing the scarred marble floor, many people's first reaction is that the stone material is strong, how can it be easily damaged and broken? In fact, stone is not as strong as imagined. If proper care is not taken during the processing, transportation, and installation of stone, it is very easy to cause damage to the surface of the stone. (For example, in stone cutting and processing, the saw runs and cuts on the surface of the stone, causing cracks in the stone. the stone does not have corresponding protective measures such as back mesh and back glue, causing shaking and surface damage during transportation. the stone is contaminated by external water sources during installation, exacerbating the degree of stone damage.)
Causes of surface cracks and damages in natural marble
The main reasons for cracks and damages on the surface of natural marble can be summarized into two aspects: the structural reasons of the stone itself and the reasons for human use (such as mining, processing, transportation, installation, and environmental factors).
After on-site communication and investigation of the commercial square floor, it was found that the main reasons for stone damage are as follows:
(1) Natural stone itself has abundant sutures and numerous hidden cracks.
The rich patterns on the surface of natural stone make it colorful, but it also brings many problems to the use of stone. Because these patterns are the stitching lines (water lines) of the stone, which are weak areas on the surface of the stone. Once compressed or collided, they can easily turn hidden cracks into surface cracks.
(2) Insufficient stone health preservation time leads to hollowing phenomenon.
During the process of stone paving, wet cement paste is used, which comes into contact with water and alkaline substances, causing chemical reactions and easily causing cracks in natural marble. The cement used for paving does not have sufficient curing time, the cement is not firmly bonded, premature stepping, and heavy objects can all cause deformation and hollowing of the stone. The hollowing of stone can easily cause surface cracks when dragging heavy objects or undergoing grinding treatment before renovation.
(3) Without standardized six sided protection coating, the stone cannot effectively resist external pollution.
Due to the high water absorption rate of the stone laid on the ground and the lack of protective coating, the stone cannot effectively block external pollution. For example, when the humidity in the air is high, stone will absorb moisture and expand. When the weather is clear and the air is dry, the stone will automatically release the moisture inside the stone. Frequent changes in dryness and wetness, as well as shrinkage and expansion, will accelerate the deterioration of stone cracks.
Suggestions for crack treatment on board surface
If there are cracks and local damage on the surface of the stone, high-quality resin adhesive can be selected for surface repair treatment to restore the decorative effect of the stone surface. Severely broken or damaged stone can seriously affect its appearance. It is recommended to replace it with a stone that meets the quality requirements for use.
When repairing the surface of stone, the following precautions should be taken:
(1) Before repairing the stone surface, it should be ensured that the surface and cracks are clean and dry. Otherwise, the adhesive strength of the repaired colloid will not be firm and it is easy to fall off again.
(2) The adhesive used for repairing the surface of stone should have good adhesion, filling ability, permeability, and polishability to ensure the construction quality of the adhesive repair.
(3) When repairing the surface of stone, it is necessary to ensure that the glue is full, full, and does not collapse, so that the ground glue can truly blend into the stone.
(4) The waterproofing of the stone surface needs to be constructed in place and meet the construction requirements. Proper waterproofing of stone can reduce its water absorption rate and effectively resist the erosion and damage caused by external factors. Delaying the weathering of stone and improving its stain resistance and corrosion resistance.
