What are the requirements for marble engraving

Marble used for artistic carving must meet specific quality standards to ensure durability, aesthetic appeal, and workability. Key requirements include:

Dense Structure & Uniform Grain – The marble should be compact, with fine and evenly distributed grains to prevent chipping or crumbling during carving.

Absence of Defects – Cracks, fissures, or mineral inclusions (like pyrite or clay veins) must be avoided, as they weaken structural integrity and affect carving precision.

Color & Pattern Consistency – The stone's hue, veining, and texture should align with the artistic design. White (e.g., Carrara), black, or vividly patterned varieties (e.g., Calacatta) are preferred based on project needs.

Size & Shape – Blocks should exceed 0.15 m³ to accommodate large sculptures, with shapes minimizing waste.

Weather Resistance (Outdoor Use) – For exterior installations, marble must exhibit low water absorption (<0.5%) and high resistance to weathering (e.g., dolomitic marble). Surface oxidation is acceptable, but internal degradation must be absent.

Popular choices include Statuario (fine-grained, pure white) for indoor art and Crema Marfil (warm tones) for decorative pieces. Proper quarrying and storage prevent moisture-induced damage pre-carving.
