Why is basalt dark in color

Basalt is a type of volcanic rock that is dark in color because of the minerals that make it up. The dominant mineral in basalt is usually dark-colored pyroxene, which gives the rock its dark grey or black appearance.

Despite its dark color, basalt is still a beautiful and valuable material. It is commonly used for building and construction, as well as for sculpture and decorative purposes. Basalt can also be crushed into small particles and used as an aggregate in asphalt and concrete.

In addition to its practical uses, basalt also has a rich cultural significance. It has been used by various cultures around the world for thousands of years, from the ancient Egyptians who used it to create stone tools, to the Polynesians who used it for their impressive stone carvings.

Overall, although the color of basalt might be considered dark, it is still a valuable and important resource that has contributed to human civilization throughout history.
